I love tomatoes and onion and have been eating it for years. While we were reading Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder, we are told of a meal that Almanzo loved: Fried Apples ‘n’ Onions. Even though the boys don’t like onions, we thought we would give it a try. When researching recipes, I came […]
In the book, Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Almanzo talks of drinking egg nog quite a bit. Here in Australia, egg nog is not a very popular drink and our boys have never had it before. We decided to try and make our own so that the boys could have a taste of this […]
Our boys love doughnuts, so when we read about Almanzo’s mom’s doughnuts that she made for her kids in Farmer Boy, we just had to try to make them too. We used a recipe similar to what she would have used and they tasted great. This is one recipe that we will make over and over […]

As the oldest child of six children, my mother did a lot of baking, especially biscuits and snack type foods. One of the biscuits she made all the time, were rice bubble biscuits. The boys and I were talking about what I ate as a child, so I decided I would bake some of these […]
Whether you grow them in your garden or purchase them from the store, it is always good to have beets on hand for an impromptu bbq or to use in your favourite side dish. Here is how I freeze beets. The way to do it is: Trim off all the excess leaf stems leaving 1/2 inch […]
After making the passionfruit curd, I was left with four egg whites, so I decided to make some basic meringues to have with the curd. This recipe only has four ingredients and is very easy to make. I decorated our meringues with a small amount of whipped cream and a dollop of passionfruit curd.
